The Latest Scoop
We go the extra mile!
In 2020, our mobile clinic team performed 2,005 spay/neuter surgeries and provided medical care to 1,823 dogs and cats—compared to 1,300 spays/neuters and 1,100 pets assisted with veterinary care in 2019. The provision of 65 percent more clinic services in 2020 reflects the enormous need in our community created by the pandemic. We hosted 190 clinic days during 2020, compared to 140 in 2019 and 120 in 2018. Your contributions keep us rolling!
Assisting a community in need
Since the start of COVID-19, our Companion Pet Assistance program has provided more than four tons of pet food weekly to pet owners in need, compared to two tons in all of 2019. We distribute pet food in our mobile clinic and during events with agencies such as the Foodbank and People Helping People. We also deliver pet food to seniors stuck in their homes. Pet owners can also access food at our dozen Pet Resource Centers. It's all about keeping pets with their people!
Our Pet Wellness Clinics help hundreds of animals weekly
Every week, we host multiple Pet Wellness Clinics, assisting hundreds of dogs and cats in need with vaccines, flea treatment, dewormer, nail trims, microchips, and emergency pet food distribution, in addition to and free and low-cost spays/neuters and critical medical care in our mobile clinic. Santa Barbara County Animal Services joins us frequently to sell dog licenses and also provides free microchips at special events. During our March 7 clinic in Lompoc, we assisted 100-plus pets. Companion Animal Placement Assistance (CAPA) donated free chips.
A Texas pet rescue team effort
On March 6 and 7, our C.A.R.E.4Paws crew transported 22 shelter dogs and one cat from Texas in a collaboration with Santa Barbara County Animal Services (check out the KEYT video!). Winter storms have left Texas shelters beyond overcrowded and these agencies have to make space for more pets in need. The 22 animals that arrived here are being adopted out to great homes by SBCAS. Shadow's Fund and Santa Barbara County Animal Care Foundation were also instrumental in making this happen. Go team!
We receive a Congressional award!
We are very honored to receive a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Salud Carbajal for our work in the community since 2009 and our unprecedented efforts during COVID-19. Thank you for the wonderful acknowledgment! You can view all of the great media coverage here and click to watch the award ceremony video!
A Safe Haven for pets in need
Our Safe Haven program ensures that domestic violence survivors can find safety for their pets when they leave an abusive situation. Pet owners can seek emergency shelter with their animals through Domestic Violence Solutions (DVS), and we arrange for anonymous foster care or boarding for the pets. We also collaborate with the District Attorney's Office Victim-Witness Assistance Program. Plus, victims and law enforcement can contact us directly for support. Learn more here.
Pawsome pet food partners
C.A.R.E.4Paws is truly grateful to our partners and donors, who contribute food and also collect pet food donations for us. This includes awesome businesses and nonprofit friends such as Dioji K-9 Resort & Athletic Club, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, Montecito Pet Shop, Lemos Feed & Pet Supply, ResQcats, ASAP, Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society/DAWG, Advanced Veterinary Specialists and La Cumbre Plaza's Plaza Deli.
Grooming for dogs of the homeless
On the first Thursday of each month, we provide baths for homeless community members with A's Dog Grooming at Santa Barbara's Alameda Park. We have spent every Thursday at the park since the beginning of summer, distributing pet food, blankets, pet beds, flea treatment and more to those in need. Thanks to a generous C.A.R.E.4Paws donor, we were able to add grooming services, too.
We keep working with youth enrolled in afterschool-care at the YMCA in Lompoc as well as at the United Boys & Girls Clubs in Lompoc and Goleta. The kids learn about compassionate pet care, safety around animals, dog training and more. The get to meet and hang out with our ambassador pets: pups Penny and Eddies Topher the kitty and Little Star from Little Star Pony Foundation. Learn more about Paws Up For Pets here.
Foodraising with ResQcats
We could not be more grateful to Jeffyne Telson and ResQcats for hosting a cat-food drive for C.A.R.E.4Paws, first in September 2020, then through the holidays and now she continues into 2021. ResQcats has raised more than $13,000 worth of food, which helps feed so many kitties in our community!
