Citizen Canine & Feline

Lack of pet-friendly housing is the number one of the main reason dogs and cats end up in our shelters. This is why we're creating a program to help pet owners find housing and to create awareness among landlords and property management companies regarding the benefits of renting to pet owners. The program is still being developed.

Our program aims to:
  • Increase the overall number of pet‐friendly residential rental units in Santa Barbara County.

  • Connect with landlords and property management representatives about the potential benefits of renting to pet owners, including income enhancement.

  • Help existing and potential pet owners, who depend on rental housing, to prepare and present themselves and their animal companions to a landlord or property management company to increase their chance to secure a rental contract.

  • Promote pet‐friendly landlords and businesses to prospective tenants by providing listings on C.A.R.E.4Paws' and other websites and in social media.

  • Utilize established C.A.R.E.4Paws' networks to engage additional animal advocates, rescues, and shelters countywide and beyond to contribute references and serve as a clearing‐house of resources to tenants.

  • Work with Santa Barbara County Animal Services and other community partners to create a new protocol and/or templates that can be shared with Animal Control departments nationwide to implement a new program for pets being surrendered to a shelter due to landlord‐tenant issues.
