About the book...
Through fun, easy-to-read messages and cute illustrations of "Jack,” “Kitty” and other animal friends, Pawsitive Thinking teaches kids about basic animal care and behavior, things to think about before getting a pet, one's responsibilities as a pet owner and how to integrate a pet into the family. It also talks about shelter and rescue animals and adoption.

The thing is, pets have a wonderful spell on children, but that doesn't mean kids always know how to behave around animals, or that they know what it means to take good care of a pet. Kids taught to treat animals with compassion and respect are not only kinder to friends and other human beings, research shows, but they take those values into adulthood and pass them onto their children. It's the first lesson in empathy, the ability to understand and be sensitive to the experiences of all living beings.

The book, which is an extension of C.A.R.E.4Paws' elementary school program, is supported by the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at University of California, Santa Barbara. Student teachers at the Gevirtz school receive a copy of the book and learn the Pawsitive Thinking program so that they, in turn, can share the message in classrooms around the country.

But the significance of this book reaches well beyond the schoolyard. Just as Pawsitive Thinking shows kids how to be great pet caretakers, it encourages them to bring the message of responsible pet ownership home to their parents, siblings and extended family. The result: a steadily growing number of pet ambassadors promoting animal welfare, which will spur a dramatic decrease in pet overpopulation and the number of pets relinquished to, and euthanized in, shelters each year.
